FAU funding for Martin Weiser

Martin Weiser received two internal grants to facilitate the preparation of a large-scale research proposal. The money from the EAM Starting Grant and the ETI-funding will help to establish a dedicated research environment for the investigation of the so-called dual-atmosphere effect. The effect describes the well-known but until today not understood detrimental effect of hydrogen on the formation and stability of thermally grown Cr2O3 layers. In the center of interest are Fe-Cr alloys since they are for example used as interconnect materials in solid oxide fuel cells under these severe conditions between 600 and 800 °C. Furthermore, labelled isotopes (e.g. 18O) will be utilized to elucidate diffusion paths of elements. After thermal exposure, a correlative analysis with atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) will deliver unprecedented insights into elementary corrosion mechanisms.
