Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS)
At the Chair MSEI, a custom-built thermal desorption analysis (TDA) system is available. This setup enables the quantification of hydrogen content in samples that have been pre-charged with hydrogen. In addition to determining the total hydrogen content, it allows conclusions to be drawn about the microstructural features to which hydrogen is bound, as well as the ratio between diffusible and trapped hydrogen.
Furthermore, isothermal experiments can be conducted to measure hydrogen diffusion rates in the material at various temperatures. The desorbed hydrogen is detected using a mass spectrometer from Hiden Analytical (HAL/3F RC PIC). Measurements are performed under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions, and the samples are resistively heated using a molybdenum wire.
